From Fear into Confidence
Donald Trump will become our new President in a few days. Many people are feeling fear and uncertainty. What is behind all of this fear? Based on Donald Trump’s rhetoric and the memory of German concentration camps and US internment of Japanese-Americans, there is now an expectation of even more reduced civil liberties and possible Muslim concentrations camps. And the disregard for many other social, economic and environmental issues feeds fear, too.
When I look deeply at what underlies my fear of a Trump administration, I find personal and family trauma that intensified fear and uncertainty leading to a deep feeling of not being safe. My nervous system learned to stay over stimulated and on alert. Donald Trump represents so much of what I learned to fear. Gratefully much of that has been resolved, and as I continue to heal at deeper levels, my natural confidence moves forward. What is under your fear?
For some fear is overpowering, for others it is transformed into confident action. Existing local efforts are being increased. Many new grassroots organizations are being formed. Here on Lummi Island a dozen or so of us are starting a Lummi Island water protectors group. Be willing to look at what you fear and begin the process of shifting that fear to confidence.
