There is so much divisiveness in the world these days – political, religious, rich vs poor (where did the middle class go?). In our community one hot topic is the push for a new export terminal that will receive coal coming from Montana and ship it to China. That means lots of coal trains and lots of huge tankers going by our little island and through salmon and orca whale habitat. Some people in Whatcom County are for the project because it will create jobs; others say the jobs are temporary or people will be brought in to fill them without much benefit to the community. Others are concerned with how coal dust will affect our health, the environment, and contribute to global warming. The native peoples say the location for the port is on a sacred burial ground. The outcome of this could affect generations of people in this area and around the globe. For me the outcome of finding an alternative to a coal terminal is crucial. However, how we think about, talk about and treat everybody involved in the discussions is of even more importance. For humans to evolve out of constant conflict, we have to learn to see each differently. Yet it is so easy to forget that we are all Spirit having a human experience. Time to practice.
