Beauty Way of the Earth Keeper

It’s in the news these days. I hear about it mostly through the internet, emails and facebook. Climate change, environmental destruction, desertification, war vets killing civilians or committing suicide. This reminds me of the Vietnam War era song “Where have all the flowers gone, long time passing…when will they ever learn, when will they ever learn?”

Now Monsanto seeks to have the USDA approve its 2,4-D resistant corn. 2,4-D, a known toxin, carcinogen and hormone disrupter, is a chemical component of agent orange, a defoliant used during the Viet Nam war that is now being put into pesticides for use with the 2,4-D resistant corn. Talk to the vets who were exposed to agent orange and now suffer the affects. When will they ever learn?

Schools are buying beef with pink slime filler (feedlot beef by-products treated with ammonia hydroxide to kill E coli and salmonella) to feed our children. When will they ever learn?

Environmental, social justice and political activist burn themselves out with anger. It’s easier to feel anger than grief. They point fingers at the “other” and shout, “When will they ever learn?” Yet…

We are all children of the Earth. Our DNA tells us that. Of all of the planets and star systems in the Universe, we chose to live here on this beautiful blue green planet. Yet we forget and desecrate our own home. When will we ever learn?

This is one reality of the world we live in today. There are other realities.

People saving and restoring ecosystems.

People, communities, groups and organizations with different political, social and religious orientations working together for the health of our Earth.

Civilian peacekeeping groups that go into areas of violence to help protect the civilians and diffuse tension between warring groups.

It doesn’t work to hide our heads in the sand about what is happening on our Earth, yet where do we put our attention, our focus for the present and the future? On what is outrageously awful or creating the change we want? Personally I’ve found the answer to be just enough of the awful to be aware, then shift my focus to creating a beautiful present and future.
