For two years, I created relationship with the Paper Birch Tree down the road. It is on private property that belongs to the son of a man who lives across the road. The son doesn’t live here and hasn’t (thankfully) developed the property. So I asked the father if I could “sit with the tree to journal and draw.” He’s known me casually for a while, so just gave me a quizzical look and said, “Thanks for asking.” So now I had the agreement of the tree and the owner. As is typical for the Pacific Northwest, the weather was the deciding factor for timing the essence making. Finally on a brisk June morning, I got the call Today!
Joy, Gratitude, and Confidence
This is an amazing tree. 5 trees grew together years ago to form the base, and there is a relatively flat crotch about 7 feet up full of moss and leaves. The 5 trunks, now over 100 feet tall, grow up from the crotch in a circle. The bark is stunning! It is white with dark brown and black marking with ripples and ridges that partly peel away from the under layers. Dappled sunlight streamed in from the mixed evergreen and red alder tree forest around it. I set the mother bottles and stones, and allowed Spirit song to stream through me to set the field for the essence making. Then I sat down to write and draw. The first thing I heard was “peels away old emotional layers.”
When I started musing over what essence to highlight for this November newsletter, Paper Birch came to mind. Fall is a time for letting go, striping away the old, dying, decaying, and looking inside. As we go deeply internal and find our own Light, joy and love, we are invited to share these qualities with family, friends and others during the Thanksgiving Holiday Season.
Paper Birch Tree Essence
Paper Birch Trees have a wide range from Canada, Alaska and northern continental United States. They grow in open to dense forests, usually moist lowland to low mountain slopes. The distinguishing feature is the white bark – often with dark marks and scars – that peels horizontally. The bark was used to make paper, baskets, and canoes. Other parts of the tree have many uses, including fuel, medicinal gum and glue.
