Ponderosa Pine Tree is found in dry foothills to montane forests west of the Rocky Mountains to east of the coastal mountain ranges from southern British Columbia to New Mexico. This thick-bark, fire resistant evergreen tree grows to 130 feet and usually has groups of 3 needles. The seeds have long been a valued food of wildlife and indigenous peoples. The inner lining of the bark was eaten. The resin was chewed as gum and used for medicinal purposes including abscesses, joints and backaches. Pitch is antiseptic and can be used as glue and to waterproof woven containers. The soft wood has many uses including fence posts, snowshoes, baby cradles, cabinets and crates. Ponderosa Pine is also known as western yellow pine, bull pine and rock pine.
